The Summer Youth Cadet Program is a 10 day program for kids between the ages of 12 and 14 who have an interest in law enforcement. Participants get to experience first-hand the inner workings of the Brunswick Police Department. The program includes visits to the Glynn-Brunswick 9-1-1 Center, the Glynn County Courthouse and other locations. Teens will also learn about the Glynn-Brunswick Narcotics Enforcement Team (GBNET), the Marine Patrol program, SWAT team, Criminal Investigations, the K-9 unit, and Patrol operations through visits from officers assigned to those units. Members of other law enforcement agencies such as the Georgia DNR also visit the program. The Summer Youth Cadet Program program also includes the opportunity to participate in mock traffic stops, ride-a-longs with patrol officers, mock tactical operations and to solve a mock crime scene by creating their own team of investigators. Members of the program receive instruction in fingerprinting, handcuffing techniques, firearm safety, pursuit driving, the court system and laws.
The goal of the Summer Youth Cadet Program is to help teens develop social and leadership skills by building an appreciation for the values of public service. The program is designed to give youth a unique view of law enforcement operations, to teach life skills, and to help them build a commitment to their community.
Dates for the 2014 Summer Youth Cadet Program are June 8th through the 20th for the first session and July 7th through the 18th for the second session. A graduation ceremony and dinner for participants in both sessions will be held the evening of July 18th at Old City Hall.
